In Islam, martyrdom is one of the greatest aims of a true believer. It is an honor for a Muslim to die as a martyr because of the abundant rewards Almighty Allah has transcripted in the Holy Quran.
But to be laid down as a shaheed doesn’t always mean to raise a sword or stand on the battlefield and fight. There are people who lived worshipped Almighty Allah sincerely and led upright lives till they breathe last, they were titled as martyrs even though they never carried a weapon even. There are various ways that a believing Muslim can be granted the honor of shaheed. Holy Prophet (PBUH) has told us about the types of martyrs in his hadiths which shows that the way you live your life is as important as how you die.
Different Types Of Shuhadah
The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, “There are seven kinds of martyr other than those killed in the way of Allah. Someone who is killed by the plague is a martyr, someone who drowns is a martyr, someone who dies of pleurisy is a martyr, someone who dies of a disease of the belly is a martyr, someone who dies by fire is a martyr, someone who dies under a falling building is a martyr and a woman who dies in childbirth is a martyr.” – Al Muwatta Malik, Book 16, Hadith 36
Narrated Sa’id ibn Zayd: The Prophet (PBUH) said: “He who is killed while protecting his property is a martyr and he who is killed while defending his family, or his blood, or his religion is a martyr” – Sunan Abi Dawud, Book 42, Hadith 177
According To The Above-Mentioned Hadiths, There Are Nine Types Of Martyrs
1. the one who dies of plague
2. the one who drowns
3. the one who dies of pleurisy
4. the one who dies of a stomach disease
5. the one who dies by fire
6. the one who dies under a falling building
7. the woman who dies in childbirth
8. the one who dies while protecting his property
9. the one who dies while defending his family or religion
Rewards Of Those Who Are Martyrs
1. They’ll Receive Good Tidings
It is stated in the Holy Quran that,
Rather, they are alive with their Lord, receiving provision, Rejoicing in what Allah has bestowed upon them of His bounty, and they receive good tidings about those [to be martyred] after them who have not yet joined them – that there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve. They receive good tidings of favor from Allah and bounty and [of the fact] that Allah does not allow the reward of believers to be lost – Surah Ale Imran, verse 169 – 171
2. Allah Will Forgive Every Sin Of A Martyr
Abdullah bin ‘Amr bin Al-‘As (RA) reported: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, “Allah forgives every sin of a martyr, except his debt.” Sahih Muslim, Book 12, Hadith 28
3. He’ll Test You At First
And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient – Surah Baqarah, verse 155
May Allah grant a higher place to martyrs in Jannah, Ameen!
