Weeks ago, Mahira Khan was pictured with Bollywood sensation Ranbir Kapoor, casually hanging out somewhere in New York.

The viral picture sparked a heightened debate on social media. Mahira’s reputation took a nosedive as many Pakistanis resorted to a heap of criticism over the viral picture. She was bullied and scorned for smoking a cigarette. The moral brigade of Pakistanis was on a roll and we saw some shocking remarks by people all across the country.

The whole controversy span weeks on social media. It was the personification of a radical society abusing a woman’s right to live her life by her choice.

Soon after, many Pakistani celebrities showed immense support to Mahira Khan after she was inflicted with hurls and abuses by keyboard warriors in Pakistan. The matter dramatically took twists and turns and before all could settle down, it’s ripped open again.

Mahira Khan breaks silence over the controversy surrounding her… this is what she said:

What can I comment? It’s was a personal thing. I have learned from it. I am a very careful person, otherwise. I have learned. Just like how people say,” you have do this for the sake of film and entertainment?” I say, “no, I don’t want to do it. I don’t have to do it for the world.”

Firstly, I think it’s very normal for a girl and a guy to hang out. It’s a very normal thing. Secondly, like I said, we’ve all learned from it. We’ve understood that you people (the media) are everywhere.

Mahira makes a lot of sense here. It’s good to see her back in the business and continuing on what she does.

We hope our celebrities do not have to go through such traumatic experiences and vandalization of their personal lives in future again. People should learn to control their words and judgement before lashing out at anyone.
