Maya Ali Opens Up About Her Struggle With Severe Anxiety

Regardless of the prevalence and global impact of mental health conditions, it is still not so easy to open up and ask for help when you most need it. Luckily, in recent years, we have seen a shift in the way people view and talk about mental health. Conversations about depression, anxiety, addiction, and more have moved from the private to the public sphere. Lately, Pakistani actress Maya Ali recently opened up about her mental health.

When public figures open up about their own mental health struggles, it can help break down stigma,. Not only that but it also sparks important discussions, and even inspires people to seek treatment. Being in the public eye is part of the job when becoming a star.

However, it can make it more difficult to navigate one’s problems. Many stars, however, have used their platform to normalize mental health problems. And lately, Maya Ali opened up about her battle with mental health.

Talking about the anxiety and mental health issues she faced, Ali shared, “I remember my exams were close, and I was studying. I went to get a glass of water after that I was not in my senses. I fainted. When I woke up I was in the hospital, and I asked my mother to go home as I had to study.”

“She told me that I have been in the hospital for two and a half days. It was very different for me, being a 16-year-old girl, I could not understand anything. I came home and presumed that I am fine, but slowly I started feeling changes in my body.”

I used to get anxiety fits, says Maya Ali

In addition to this, she said, “When I started my graduation, the doctor used to give me a medicine that I have to put under the tongue because I used to have extremely bad fits. So my treatment started.”

“If anyone in my relatives used to ask my family, ‘What has happened to her?’, they used to say Nothing, she is just not feeling well’. Whenever we had to go somewhere, my parents used to ask me to put my medicine under my tongue, and not to do anything there. And I always used to say that I am not doing anything intentionally, it just happens to me,” Maya said.

She concluded by saying, “I was in class 10 when I saw a panel of doctors on TV talking about the symptoms of depression and anxiety. I went to my mother and told her that I have all these symptoms they are telling on TV. My mother asked me to turn off the TV and to study.”

Looking at the celebrities, all we see is perfection; perfect clothes, makeup, glamour, and whatnot. But deep down we do not have the slightest clue of what is going on in their lives. However, we forget that literally, no one is living a perfect life.

Several celebrities in the past have opened up about their battles with a mental health issue in the recent past. They have bravely accepted living with issues ranging from anxiety to depression.
