Salat – Namaz, holds the most dominant position in Islam. It is obligatory on Muslims five times a day. Its significance can be amplified by the following Hadith:

Jabir bin Abdullah says: I heard the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) saying this: “The difference between a man (Muslim) and Shirk and Kufr is abandoning of Salaah”- (Sahih Muslim: Kitab ul Iman: Book 001, Number 0147)

Let’s take a deeper look at Salat. It is not just a religious ritual of praising Lord; it also holds the complete philosophy of life in it. Here is how?

Almighty Allah (S.W.T) wanted us to bow before Him, He would have commanded us to offer the entire prayer in prostration. But, He did not order us to do so. In Holy Quran, Allah has mentioned standing in prayer more times than to bow before Him. We start our prayer by standing (Qayyam), then we bend (Ruku) and finally, we bow (Sujood) before Him.

Even in this most humbled state when our foreheads are on the ground, we are praising Him and pouring our hearts out before Him, He wants us to get up and stand again. He wants us to stand tall on our feet and NOT to bend on our knees.

SEE? Isn’t it a message from our Greatest, Magnificent and most Merciful Lord? It certainly is. The message is that in life we stand, we stumble upon many times, even we fall but our Lord, Allah (S.W.T) wants us to stand against difficulties. Through the “Formula of Prayer”, He showed us how to live bravely in the face of adversities just like He showed Cain (Kabil) to bury his dead brother Abel (Habil) through the example of a crow scratching the ground.

The stages of Salat also show us various stages of life. Salat becomes obligatory in that stage of our lives when we are becoming youthful and strong. Allah (S.W.T) showed us via prayer that in youth we stand, then as we age; we will bend and finally, we will return to dust. Afterward, we all will be resurrected again on the day of judgment.

So next time when you offer prayer, keep in mind that your Lord wants you to stand up again when you fall and remember Him at each and every stage of your life. May we all offer our prayers with complete submission, devotion and out of sheer gratitude for our Mighty Creator. Ameen
