Tampons fall under the modern age measures when it comes to menstruation. Just like the sanitary napkins, tampons are used to absorb the menstrual flow. The soft cotton is used as the material, pressed in the cylinder-like shape which can be inserted easily into the vaginal opening, absorbing the menstrual flow.

Based on the fact that the tampons are inserted into the vagina, the modern-day Muslim male scholars have debated on how it is forbidden in Islam. Given how much of these claims are stated without any references, this lately sparked a debate among the masses on social media as well.

So Are Tampons Really Forbidden in Islam?

Back in the day, there was no such as tampons hence, there is absolutely no proof in Quran or Hadith which rejects or forbade the use of tampons.

According to Hanafi Jurist Allam Ibn Abidin, while addressing the same concerns during the Imam al-Barkawi’s Fiqh of Menstruation, the modern age Muslim girls can use tampons to address their needs. He further stated, “it was a customary practice among Muslim women in the past to have special clothes for stemming the menstrual blood. Modern tampons are not much different from what women used in the past. Hence, there is nothing wrong with women using tampons if it is easier for them.”

Several writings from experts asserted that the use of tampons has nothing to do with losing virginity, which accounts to the modern day Muslim scholars forbidding tampons in the first place. However, there are Muslim scholars who insist the use of tampons as a more hygienic and cleaner use during menses.

The menstrual blood is rubbed all over the inner thighs and vagina when using a pad. Because the impure blood touches the body, you won’t be able to read the Quran either, for as long as the blood touches your body you are not allowed to read the Quran.

With the tampons, there are no leaks. Swimmers use tampons as it absorbs the blood for hours.

The only concerns that revolve around tampons are regarding the use of it as there are some precautions needed.
