I turned 20 sixteen days ago and quite honestly, the feeling still hasn’t settled in. I’m not sure what social responsibilities I have and what people expect of me right now, but needless to say, life has been one of my greatest teachers. Here are some surprising jaw-dropping (kinda) facts about me. I’m 20 and this is all that I achieved in these 2 decades. There’s no chronological order to this, so bear with me.

  • Started to play the piano at an early age of 7
  • Finished my 10th grade at 15
  • Completed my I.com at 17
  • Got into one of the top ten Universities in Karachi by 17 as well
  • Completed 4 semesters by 19
  • Started a blog at 18
  • Learned how to blog with professionals at 19
  • Got 35+  articles published in 6 weeks by 20
  • Had my heartbroken a gazillion bazillion times now

During this rollercoaster of a journey, I had the opportunity to learn, grow and work with the best of the best. Keeping that in mind, here are 20 things my expedition has taught me.

1. You’re enough

In life, you’re going to find people who will criticise you and tell you that your existence isn’t enough, your wit, power, beauty, and vibe just isn’t enough for them. They’re wrong to the core. You’re everything you were destined to be and that’s more than enough.

2. Nothing lasts

Whatever you’re feeling at this moment, is not something you will feel 20 minutes from now. This goes to show how temporary things can be. Similarly, your sadness will not last just like your happiness. Live in the moment and treasure it for what it is.

3. Your mobile isn’t important

I remember getting my first mobile. It was a divine moment of liberty and self-realization. But with the passage of time, I’ve come to understand the fact that you can not live your life behind a screen. Put your phone down and be as present as you can.

4. Promises aren’t always fulfilled

No matter how many promises someone makes and how hard they try to convince you that they’ll keep it, they will end up straying away. But guess what? That’s perfectly fine.

5. Learn to accept change

I know it’s scary to step into a completely unknown situation but embrace the fear of the unknown and let it change you, not worry you. Change is good, do not run away from it. Accept it with arms wide open.

6. Wander away

Get as lost as you can because only then will you find yourself. Wander into parks alone, go to a restaurant and devour a meal with yourself. Visit a museum on your own, travel in public transport, sit in a library completely alone and always wonder.

7. Take time out for yourself

You’ll find a billion reasons to be busy, but you’ll have difficulty finding one to give yourself some love. Please remember, that being selfish is okay sometimes. There’s nothing wrong with putting yourself first.

8. Your family needs to come first at all times

Growing up, I’ve come to the sudden realization that my family has always stuck around when the rest of the world hasn’t. Which is why they’re very important for me now. I’d rather sit with my fam and talk for hours than go party out late with my friends.

9. Be independent

You need to start doing things on your own. Earn yourself, feed yourself, clothe yourself. Do everything on your own without anybody’s help. The amount of respect and authority you will gain by this is going to be worth it.

10. Never stop learning

You’re never going to know everything. Every person you come across in life, is there to teach you something. Learn from them. Even a baby can teach you something important

11. Respect

There will come a time when you’ll be on top of the world when that time comes, remember to treat everyone equally and with respect. In the same way, there will also be a time when you’ll be at your lowest, treat everyone with respect. Respect the bathroom cleaner, the gardener, the office boy and everyone else.

12. Have faith

Life will knock you down. You will hit rock bottom and when you do, I want you to know that hitting rock bottom is great. Because you can’t go any deeper. The only way you’ll go now is up. During this time, don’t forget to pray. Pray with tears in your eyes and pain in your heart, for that is the time you will realize that things are going to get better.

13. Don’t stop loving

You loved the wrong person and now you despise the feeling. That’s not fair. Hate the person, not the emotion. Every heartbreak will bring you closer to the person you’re destined to be with. Take it like a stepping stone.

14. Never stop smiling

This may sound cliche but always smile through the pain. You’ll soon find out that smiling your way out of things will prove to be the best retaliation ever.

15. You will get hurt. Accept it.

No matter how hard you try, you are bound to get hurt. There is no denying the pain, all you need to do is cruise through the sea of misery as calmy as you can.

16. You’re a warrior

Remember, that every scar you have, every battle you’ve fought, every time you’ve got out of bed when you clearly didn’t want to, was a victory and that you’re a strong warrior.

17. Your friends are just as important

Choose them very wisely. They will shape you and influence you in the heaviest way possible. They can either make you or break you.

18. Your significant other will come along

There’s no rush when the time will be right, they will come into your life without you dating every other person. Focus on yourself. Build yourself and make something in the meantime. You have to be the person you’d want to find first.

19. Dream big

Dreams don’t have any limitations. Dream as big as you can, because only then will you find the courage to achieve them. If you can dream it, you can get it.

20. All that shimmers is sure to fade

A wise man once said, “All that shimmers is sure to fade”. This sentence has changed my thinking process. Don’t run after things just because someone said that they’re cool. Be you, do your own thing and let your work make all the noise for you.

These are 20 things that I’ve learned in 20 years. Perhaps the strongest line I can say in conclusion is that You Define Yourself. This is something I close very dear to my heart and I can only hope that one day you will realize the importance of all these lessons. They’re the hardest things I’ve learned so far.
