Every religion has great respect for its holy scriptures or sacred books. No matter how old or in what form they are, the followers of a certain religion always give honor to those scriptures. Holy Quran is the compilation of verbal revelations given to Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) in the time period of 23 years. It is not just an ordinary scripture, all the laws, commandments, codes for moral behavior, and a comprehensive religious philosophy has been written in it.

Every single verse and word of the Holy Quran is respectable for Muslims. That’s why one should acquire the state of purity and cleanliness before touching it, on the other hand, it should be placed in a clean and respectable way. Allah says in the Holy Quran that,

In a Register well-protected; None touch it except the purified. [It is] a revelation from the Lord of the worlds – Surah Waqiyah, verse 78 – 80

But when the Holy Quran gets old, its page is getting worn out or the binding of the book gets torn, what should we do? It has been seen that the Islamic teachings of disposal of the Holy Quran fall into the options which return the material to the earth naturally, this includes burying, placing the sacred book in flowing water or soaking it in water. Imam Muhammad, the student of Imam Abu Hanifa (RA) described how to dispose of the Holy Quran in detail. He wrote in his fatwa that,

“If a copy of the Mushaf (Quran) becomes old and it is difficult to read from it, it should not be burnt in the fire. It will not be disliked to bury it. It should be wrapped in a pure cloth, and a Lahd grave (grave that has an incision in the side wall, customary in hot climate countries where the earth is solid) should be dug, because if a Shiq grave (grave with a straight opening, common in cold climate countries due to the earth being soft) is dug and the copy of the Quran is buried, it will entail the soil falling on top of the Quran which is a form of disrespect, unless a slab is placed as a roof. – Radd al-Muhtar, Volume 5, page 271

Here are a few other methods of disposal of the Holy Quran mentioned by Islamic scholars.

1. Burying

As per Imam Muhammad’s fatwa, the Holy Quran should be buried with respect by wrapping it in a pure piece of cloth. It is recommended to bury the Holy Quran at a place where people (normally) do not walk about. In cold climate countries (such as the UK), one may dig a Shiq grave, but a slab should be placed first and over it the soil.

2. Shredding

If the letters of the Holy Quran are finely shredded and unrecognizable, that shredded material should be buried or put in water.

3. Place In Flowing Water

The second method of disposal of the Holy Quran could place it in flowing water by fastening the Quran with a heavy object like a stone and then placing it respectfully in flowing water. In this way, the words will wipe away and the paper will disintegrate naturally.

4. Store Holy Quran In A Respectable Way

One can simply avoid the issue by putting the Holy Quran into permanent storage.
