Safar is the second Islamic month. It has been observed that there are many misconceptions associated with the month of Safar. According to people, Safar is a difficult month for men, starting a business and marrying is considered a bad luck. But what has Islam and the Holy Prophet (PBUH) told us about Safar? Does any Quranic verse or hadith support these misconceptions?

What Does The Word ‘Safar’ Mean?

The polytheists of Makkah used to hold three months – Ziqadah, Zil Hajj, and Muharram as sacred. In these three months, they did not indulge themselves in war or crime and wait for these months to be over so that they can be free from restrictions. As soon as Safar began, they would leave their houses vacant with the intent of war or crime. The word ‘Safar’ was originated from ‘Safrun’ or ‘Sifrun’ which means ‘to become vacant’.

What Does Allah Say About The Month Of Safar?

There is no specific Quranic verse revealed about the month of Safar in Quran but yes, Allah has answered all the questions related to the reality of bad omens and bad luck.

Allah states in Holy Quran that,

What comes to you of good is from Allah, but what comes to you of evil, [O man], is from yourself. And We have sent you, [O Muhammad], to the people as a messenger, and sufficient is Allah as Witness. – Surah Nisa, verse 79

What Does Holy Prophet (PBUH) Say About Safar?

It has been said in the books of Sunnah that,

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Apostle said, ‘(There is) no ‘Adwa (no contagious disease is conveyed without Allah’s permission). nor is there any bad omen (from birds), nor is there any Hamah, nor is there any bad omen in the month of Safar, and one should run away from the leper as one runs away from a lion ” – Sahih al-Bukhari Book 71 Hadith 608

Another hadith states that,

Jabir reported Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) as saying: There is no transitive disease, no ghoul in Safar. – Sahih Muslim Book 26 Hadith 5515

What To Do In Safar?

There are no specific deeds recommended during Safar. We should worship Allah and follow the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) throughout the year and this month too. As there are a lot of misconceptions related to the month of Safar among Muslims, we should make it a point to shun these misbeliefs and acts of Shirk and spread awareness among people.
