Mariyam Nafees Highlights Women’s Safety In Pakistan

Pakistan has a high crime rate, but, more importantly, it is a deeply patriarchal, and myogenetic society. Mariyam Nafees, a renowned actress, recently highlighted the patriarchal and myogenetic aspect of Pakistani society. Furthermore, she cited the safety of females in society.

It is pertinent to note that Mariyam Nafees has been openly vocal about women safety, and have constantly cited male role in it. In a recent interview on an online podcast she stated,  “We as women don’t feel secure.”

Furthermore, she emphasized safety of women to move freely, stating “You can individually ask all 6-8 girls in this room if they feel secure walking on the street; they do not,” Meanwhile, she clarified that mugging and snatching alone were not the problem, “And this is not about the snatching and mugging aspect we are talking about here, but just the freedom to walk down the road, all by myself, for even two minutes.”

Meanwhile, she cited the role of the patriarchal nature of society adding to the insecurity of women in society. Additionally, she noted, “We do not feel secure and it’s the men who made us feel insecure,”

However, Mariyam made a distinction in males, “Not all men, but a majority of them and I’m not going to deny it

She appealed to parent to raise their sons well, teaching them respect for women and their freedom in society. So, to assure women role in public, We often focus on giving the best principles and teachings to our daughters, but when it comes to sons, they are given all the freedom of the world. There are no time restrictions for them to return home.”
