Here’s What Islam Says About Women Going To The Mosques

1262 views

The mosques are the center of education for Muslims after a mother’s lap. During the era of Holy Prophet (PBUH), Masjid e Nabwi was considered as the first comprehensive university for the Muslims where the legislation of local government, its policies, and decisions were made. With the passage of time, the mosques lost their holistic importance and converted into a place for worship only. Other than that, a major debate over the entrance of women in the mosque is still considered as a crucial argument among many Muslim scholars.

The major fatwas of different fiqhas forbid women from attending and praying in the mosque. They have given fatwas on the basis of these hadiths.

Ibn ‘Umar reported the Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) as saying; Do not prevent your women from visiting the mosque, but their houses are better for them (for praying) – (Sunan Abu Dawood Book 2 Hadith 567)

Another hadith is,

One of the wives of `Umar (bin Al-Khattab) used to offer the Fajr and the `Isha’ prayer in congregation in the Mosque. She was asked why she had come out for the prayer as she knew that `Umar disliked it, and he has great ghaira (self-respect). She replied, “What prevents him from stopping me from this act?” The other replied, “The statement of Allah’s Messenger (PBUH): ‘Do not stop Allah’s women-slaves from going to Allah’s Mosques’ prevents him.” (Sahih Bukhari, Book 11, Hadith 24).

It has been reported in Sahih Bukhari that,

Narrated by Bibi Aisha: Had Allah’s Apostle known what the women were doing, he would have forbidden them from going to the mosque as the women of Bani Israel had been forbidden. Yahya bin Said (a sub-narrator) asked ‘Amra (another sub-narrator), “Were the women of Bani Israel forbidden?” She replied “Yes.” (Sahih Bukhari, Book 12, Hadith 828).

According to some Muslim scholars, Holy Prophet (PBUH) allowed Muslim women for praying in the mosque. They provide these hadiths for reference,

It was narrated from Zainab Ath-Thaqafiyyah that: The Prophet (PBUH) said, “Anyone one of you (women) who wants to go out to the Masjid should not go near any perfume.” (Sunan Nasai, Book 48, Hadith 223)

Another hadith is,

Ibn ‘Umar reported the Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him) as saying; Do not prevent the female servant, your women from visiting the mosques of Allah. (Sunan ibn Daud, Book 2, Hadith 176)

After observing the above-mentioned hadiths, people think that women should be allowed going to the mosque. In this way, when a mother (who follows all the conditions regarding hijab) will go to mosque she will definitely bring her children with her and if this will become a tradition, our society would be considered as an ideal one.

And indeed, Allah knows the best!
