What is PCOS?

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common disease where the androgen hormone rises, abnormally. Furthermore, testosterone is the most common of androgen. A rise in the level of androgen gives male masculine characteristics such as facial hair, ease in muscle growth, etc.

However, testosterone levels may also rise in females. A high testosterone level may give women some of the male characteristics. Moreover, it causes problems in functions such as irregular periods, difficulty in pregnancies, extra body hair, gaining body weight, acne or oily skin, and male baldness.

Can PCOS Be Cured?

PCOS is incurable. However, controlling PCOS is possible with a change in diet and medicines. Additionally, a healthy diet and physical exercise may help control weight. Furthermore, birth control pills may help in regulating the menstrual cycle. Insulin medication may also prevent PCOS, as a high insulin level fights testosterone.
