Women in Saudia Arabia Are Not Allowed to Do these 4 Things and It’s Outrageous

The groundbreaking law of Saudi Arabia allowing women to finally drive was revolutionary. From driving test to eye exams, the Saudi women were and still are being issued licenses to travel across the country by their own free will.

On the other hand, Saudi Arabia is also witnessing the re-opening of public cinemas across the country since 1980s. In addition to this, the government is also planning to allow women to visit the sport stadiums, something which was banned previously.

While the decades-long banning the women from driving was something out of the ordinary, wait till you hear all about the other things Saudi women are still not allowed to do, despite living in the modern 21st century.

1. Making Important Decisions Without the Permission of a Male Guardian

The women’s right activists in Saudi Arabia have their eyes set on another hurdle; dismantling the guardianship system in the country. All the Saudi women are required to have a wali (male guardian) who could be the husband, uncle, brother, father or son.

While guardianship is not written by law, the government and courts order it for women to have the consent of their male guardian before practicing any activity, such as getting a passport, traveling and so on.
The major drawback of this is how women can never report sexual abuse or domestic violence as the authorization of their complaint will be incomplete without the approval of a man.

2. Interaction with Men

With men who are not related, women are required to limit of interaction. In Saudi Arabia, the public spaces, such as universities, banks and officers have different entrances for both genders, reducing the contact women make with men. Parks, beaches, transportation also have segregated parts as unlawful mixing is treated as a crime in the country, with women facing harsher punishments than men.

3. Not Allowed to Swim

Women in Saudi Arabia are not allowed to use the public swimming pools, which are available to men. Women can only use the private ones or the female-only spas and gym. Because men in swimsuits are there, women are not even allowed to visit the pools.

4. To Compete in Sports

Back in 2015, Saudi Arabia proposed the idea of hosting the Olympics without the presence of women. Prince Fahad bin Jalawi al-Saud said the following at that time, “Our society can be very conservative. It has a hard time accepting that women can compete in sports.”

In 2012 London Olympics, Saudi female athletes made their first-ever appearance in a sporting event. The clerics denounced the female competitors as “prostitutes” later.

While allowing women to drive was one thing, the Saudi women still do not have it easy than the other parts of the world.
