Days ago in Ramadan, we heard about these unfortunate suicide incidents – one in Haram and other in Centaurus. Keeping that in mind, a fourth-year Pakistani student of medicine, Ramsha Babar has stepped up to write first ever novel on schizophrenia – making it the first book written by a doctor/medical student on this topic in our country. The book is titled as ‘Broken Winged Birds’, the book is all about creating awareness about mental health problems and eradicating stigmas related to it.

“I have seen them suffering”, she says “Get cancer but doesn’t get a mental illness”. Reason being once you get cancer, a malignant one, you know you are going to die and it’s going to end somehow but when you get a mental illness you know it’s a part of you it will live with you grow with you … and you know only way out is taking YOUR OWN LIFE  …What could be worst than this?

The story behind the book is also very interesting and inspired by her real life! She saw one of her friend sufferings, her struggles were enough to push her into writing a book. About sixteen percent of our population suffers from mental illness and these people are mostly neglected by the society. Reality is that these people deserve our most love, care, and respect.

Here is an extract from the book :

Birds are meant to fly, conquer the horizons! Here I stand a broken-winged bird reaching that height which even a winged bird might never attain. She is all set to give wings to the broken-winged birds!

Ramsha aims for setting up an organization in the future working for mental health problems. More power to you, Ramsha
