Marriage, can’t live with it, can’t live without it. It’s a natural phenomenon that must take place in order for humankind to grow and prosper. It is through marriages that we come into this world and spend all our lives to support our own kin.
In Pakistan, marriage is considered a sacred bond, which doesn’t just unite two people, but two families. Some cultural and traditional traits, however, have made marriage a very anxious catch.
The tradition of dowry in Pakistan has been on throughout the country for over 70 years. In order for the groom and bride to live happily, the bride must bring along a certain amount of valuables and/or house appliances for the marriage to work between the couple.
The society that we live in has forced our daughters to become a burden. The unrealistic amounts of things every father must gift his daughter on her wedding have made even the most educated people dread the birth of a girl. As soon as the marriage is fixed, the groom’s family gives a list of items she is supposed to bring to the house.
Sometimes, the list covers even the basic things like refrigerator and oven that you would expect the family to already own. On the other hand, the groom’s family is only responsible for one event. And, even if they don’t host that right, it won’t matter because they are the “Larkay Walay”.
However, things must change, and this is why Pakistani celebrities have taken a stand under #StopJahezKhori. Many different celebrities from the world of drama, fashion, and films are taking part in this beautiful campaign against dowry.

Remember, it is due to dowry that thousands of marriages every year in Pakistan do are canceled out if the bride and her family cannot give enough dowry to the groom and his family.
It is a bizarre vice of our society that needs to be looked deeply into, even by state authorities. Blackmailing, extortion and face-saving – these three mantras have given dowry the prominence it has in our country and together, we should speak against it!
