You know when a woman says that she gets a lot of stares from men and the society says, “it is probably because of how you are dressed up” or “you should not go to such places“? Yeah so the problem is always what a woman chooses to do and not what a man does. That has been established and perhaps in a country like Pakistan, this may not change because people are not ready to admit anything, other than schooling women on right and wrong.

The same line of questioning was asked to the Chief Traffic Officer of Lahore – regarding harassment and staring and it probably took a very decent turn.

The Interview Begins in a Rather Aggressive Manner Where the CTO Was Not Making Much Sense

The host of the live Facebook session asked the officer on how wardens stare at the female drivers. The CTO first tells the host to distinguish between staring and making eye contact while talking. He shared his definition of harassment and when the interviewer interrupted him, he got aggressive and shared that “once women are coming on the roads, you should have this much courage to face the person who is asking you questions,”

He then said, during the interview, and that too a number of times that he is afraid of making eye contact with the female host because he fears that she may call this harassment later. He then added that this is not fair to wardens who can be accused of harassment only because they asked license or other driving-related questions.

The CTO then stated that if need be, the females can bring in a case and they will take actions against it. The host asked the CTO if there are any laws that govern this and he said that he is very considering towards harassment. “Obviously there is harassment. There is staring. The solution to this is that we educate our wardens. Not only do we educate them but also organize character building sessions. Staring is an issue.”

He Then Shared Why they Cannot Keep Female Wardens Due to the Treatment they Receive

He stated that in Lahore, they tried to keep female wardens as well, which resulted in a negative manner. CTO mentioned that the men in Lahore would either throw firecrackers at the female wardens, hoot at them or even hit them with their vehicles.

Collectively, the CTO shed light on how this is not an issue of one warden or two, but how the society collectively reacts and demonstrates their behaviors towards harassment.
