Imagine yourself entering a room with a black piece of cloth covering your eyes. As soon as you step into the room, the fragrance of fresh roses gently snakes into your system making you feel special. A moment later, soft and melodious music starts to play in the background. You step forward and your skin brushes with silky soft flower petals.

Before you could take another step forward you feel the piece of cloth on your eyes loosening. The blackness that had spread across your eyes fades away and your vision returns. There is color everywhere- bright color- red, pink, and white. Your eyes register the pattern the flowers make… HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY….. it says!

Your face curls into a pleasant smile as a familiar voice resonates in your ears, “Happy Valentine’s Day My Girl! ” You turn around in direction of the love-filled voice and see a tall and handsome man, dressed in three-piece, sitting on his knees right in front of you. You jump back in excitement as you see a box of chocolates in his hand when suddenly something pierces through the skin of your feet. You look down to register the sharp object that had pierced into your skin. It was a piece of glass- a remain of the broken flower pots. Suddenly, the smile on your face fades as your memory of yesterday materializes slowly, like bubbles from a dark bottomless well.

You were standing in front of a mirror, staring at yourself. It was the same room. The face you saw in the mirror was badly bruised and tears endlessly trickled down the cheeks. “Stop crying now… Go get me some food”, the familiar sound echoed in the room. Your sobbing faded into deep silence as your voice had faded once you had stopped standing for your rights, once you had begun to consider his love for you on valentine’s day balancing up all the stress and unease he had put you into, and once you begin considering yourself a puppet and him the master.

Fearful imagination…? Is anyone here willing to be in her place? Is being loved for only one day- for only valentine’s day- justified? Is receiving a red rose from the hands that tortured you the other day acceptable? Does getting a box of chocolates compensates the hostile words he bashed upon you?

No! None of us can let the one-day love compensate for the troubles, distress, and hardship our partner put us in. None of us should accept the love that will end as the clock ticks at 12, the love that is just for the sake of tradition and not for us, and the love that we know is just infatuation and not true love.

So, this valentine’s day, let’s unite against a tradition that promotes momentary love and become the ones who write the end of the story of a puppet and its master. No matter what, we should never give up on our rights. Because despite the many things that seem so important in life, standing for your rights is most important.
