Yesterday, I was scrolling through my Twitter homepage and I came across a picture in which a few girls were seen protesting, and holding a placard that read “Mera Jism, Meri Marzi”. Basically, it was about the clothing of women. I don’t know when this protest took place, but it wasn’t recent. This post became viral and the people (especially boys) started enlightening us with their precious thoughts on it.

Majority of the people were cursing those girls, and replied ‘Meri Aankh, Meri Marzi’. They were calling these girls liberal and un-Islamic. They weren’t liberal, which was why they were just abusing (in a civilized way according to them!) and telling them about Islam. I mentioned all this just to make you people think about the direction, we, as a nation, are heading towards.

This is how blasphemy is destroying us. Is afflicting these women using the name of Islam, right? Are we representing Islam by spreading this negative culture of abusing girls and arguing without knowing anything? I’m not even in the favor of girls saying this.

But, Islam never allowed us to put such counter assertions on them. Our religion always advises us to be realistic (and follow the scenario). Most of the people (who were commenting) were unaware of the things they were saying. If I could understand them, they meant that if a girl (even if she isn’t a Muslim) didn’t wear proper clothes, they would look at her with negativity as it would be tempting for them.

Are these people controlled by their desires? If yes, then they should look at how strong their faith is. They should know that, if a girl becomes characterless, a boy is also responsible for it. If a boy wasn’t tempted at first, that girl would never have become so. The question is; why does our society punish only women for this? The answer to this is male dominance in our society. This is why western nations blame Islam for the mistakes of so-called Muslims. Islam didn’t teach us patriarchy but it taught us to be just.

It is clearly mentioned in the Holy Quran, “Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that is more purifying for them. Surely Allah is aware of what they do.” (Al-Nur: 30) This verse clearly explains all! People have clearly strayed from the pure teachings of our divine religion.

Islam tells us not to be judgmental because it’s the duty of our Lord. We should be concerned with ourselves. We aren’t responsible for what others wear, but we are surely responsible for what our eyes see. I’m neither a feminist nor liberal, but I must say a Muslim is one who is exemplary in one’s character. This is the only way of improving the image of Muslims in the world.
