Unwanted comments, gestures, honking, wolf-whistling, catcalling, exposure, following, and touching by strangers include in street harassment which is a form of sexual harassment and sadly, it is a very common phenomenon in Pakistan. The females, irrespective of their age and dress, experience street harassment on daily basis. They are women and they are on the road; that is enough for them to be harassed.

A woman from the capital city of Pakistan shared her story with Parhlo who got harassed by a man on the F-10 Markaz Road! Here is what she told us,

Okay so in the morning, I was driving on F-10 Markaz road. This Mehran was ahead of me driving at the speed of 30 or so, as I was on 40 I overtakes him after that he started following me and came at my right side. He brought his car very near to mine and pressed the horn, I ignored it first than he did the same. I thought I might have my dupatta out of the car so I looked at it.

The man in the car saw me again, smiled and made inappropriate gestures than again he crossed me and slowed his car in front of me. I took out my phone and started taking pictures of him. And mind it, all of this was happening on a busy road not that I was alone on a road at an awkward time, it was 7.30 in the morning. Finally, when he saw the phone in my hand, he took the exit and turned to the service road. He showed weird gestures with a constant smiling face and overtaking breaking in front of me 3 to 4 times.

I am in my late 20s and a psychologist by profession, I teach others to deal and speak against such things but it was very alarming and unfortunate that on roads of Islamabad such sick minded idiots are moving freely. It’s not pretty faces or young smart girls in fancy cars or walking on roads or some backward areas, you just have to be a female to get harassed on roads.
