Our society is evolving. Gradually, but it IS evolving. Women are now empowering each other and are actually breaking stereotypes and stepping up to change the way our society thinks and judges. Even today, many women aren’t allowed to leave their house to work or simply to meet their friends or family, until and unless she is accompanied by her father, husband or brother. This, however, is leading more and more women to choose an independent life.
Recently, a picture of a girl riding a bike in Lahore, who was fully covered, minding her own business, went viral on social media. It is evident that the picture was merely taken to appreciate how cool and amazing it was to see a young girl riding a bike on the streets (which is rarely seen on Pakistani streets). But there are ‘some’ men who find such women ‘behaya’. However, this particular man was not wise with the words he chose.
Here’s what he had to say:
Sub beghairat hain tou wo bike ly kar road py hai. Mere saamne aayi tou pehli takkar mai marunga INSHA’ALLAH.
Seriously? Is he out of his mind?
Here’s what some guy had commented on her picture:
Men feel so threatened when women start taking charge. Shes sitting on a bike, fully covered from head to toe and he's calling her beghairat. Also says that he'll be the first one to hit her bike. Why? Because she's independent? pic.twitter.com/6nOC5eTm5w

This man literally seems frustrated!
Twitter was on fire when this comment when viral and here’s how Twitterati reacted to it:
Gender stereotypes, Unfortunately clerics & orthodox methods of treating women in our society is a major threat. We should respect , what if she facing financial & family compulsions? What if she the only bread earner of her family.

This bandi has a point!
For such men, driving a vehicle could be the only identity or skill set in their life & they are threatened to see it slipping away from them

Kiun hazam nahi hota?
Agreed. Nothing scares men more than a strong independent woman. That's why they deprive women of education and are so desperate to control women.

Indeed a typical mindset!
Sick minds of sick people- just the poor woman’s presence is now provocative enough for him! WTF! This kind of mindset is what doesn’t allow us to live and let live as a peaceful nation! Beghairat khud! Kanjar!!

Poore kapray na pehno tou masla. Poore pehno tou masla. Akhir chahte kia ho? Aik baar sochlo.
Why do such men feel threatened? Why does it hurt to see a woman breaking stereotypes? Women are surely changing the game! Why can’t we just accept the reality? It is finally happening! Right here in Pakistan. Be proud. Be very proud!
To all the girls who were brave enough to get out on the streets and ride bikes, you’re giving tough competition to all those men who are good for nothing except for social media trolling. More power to you! Stay safe!
P.S. We’re certainly not judging every man out there.
What’s your take on this?
