So the topic is not new as we heard a lot of stories about gender discrimination in the workplace but when it comes to the profession of law, the matter is quite more serious. Being a lawyer myself, I can easily relate to how it is like to be a female lawyer in Pakistan. It is very clear that in Pakistan, the law is a male dominant profession although a number of female students graduate in law every year, still, there is something missing. The trend has not changed yet in our chauvinistic and patriarchal society.

In our society, female lawyers are somehow suppressed. It is absolutely not to scare you but if you are going to be a lawyer, then please mind that walking on this path is not that easy as you see in the movies. Some people will even judge your character on the basis of your profession. There are plenty of problems that young female lawyers face when they enter in professional life most notably, they are suppressed and maltreated by their senior lawyers.

Finding a suitable law firm for the internship is not easy as well and if you are lucky enough to find a law firm with good environment and well-mannered sensible seniors, you will practice for years, and you’ll never get paid. Don’t be surprised if you hear about sexual harassment of a female lawyer. True it is, but a bitter reality. To spoil facts, you might even be threatened.

After all this struggle what makes you dishearten at the end that male lawyers would be preferred over female lawyers when it comes to contesting a case even after studying and practicing law for years.

The purpose was not to scare you or suggest you not to opt for this profession but one cannot deny the reality. No doubt, each profession has its pros and cons but gender discrimination is not acceptable at any level. It is not false to say that the scope of female lawyers in Pakistan is a grey area.

With limited opportunities and social constraints to grow, many women leave the profession or take up positions like in-house lawyers or legal consultants. The gap between female and male associates is quite apparent in most law firms. Most female lawyers prefer fighting corporate and family cases mainly to avoid facing any kind of harassment.

But still, we can say there is a hope which indicates that young female lawyers have the commitment to make a difference. Both worldwide and especially in Pakistan, there has been an increase in the number of women attracted to law.
