Going through this whole Nouman Ali Khan – NAK, debacle in the previous week, one thing we ALL can’t ignore is that the incident revealed a deep-rooted disease in our Muslim communities/societies/countries. An entire generation of men (yes 90’s kids, I’m talking to you) has been taught by their own precious moms and dads that boys and men can compromise on their chastity, masculinity, modesty, self-accountability, self-respect at the expense of others’ sisters, daughters, mothers, wives and still get away with it because “Mard toh akhir mard hota hai na”.
This incident actually exposed the misogyny and double standards within our own Pakistani Muslim community. Comparing the reaction to the outrage Mahira Khan got. Here’s what I noticed:
1. NAK is a man. Men will be men. Women should control themselves. They have magical powers against men. I just talked about this BS above. Not repeating.
2. Mahira Khan represents our Pakistani culture blah blah. Well, NAK represents your religion, you idiots. NAK is a preacher/teacher/scholar of Islam. A culture change with time, Islam doesn’t. This whole NAK incident might end up destroying whatever efforts Muslims made in the West. Mahira Khan ka sutta? Well, that only destroys her lungs, doesn’t it?
3. It’s NAK’s personal matter. Wasn’t it Mahira Khan’s personal matter too? She’s smoking in NYC not bothering any member of the public. What’s your problem, you sexist caveman?
BTW NAK’s behavior was predatory. If you ever allow a predator to run loose, the next victim will be your own sister, daughter, wife, mother, niece etc. It’s not NAK’s personal matter when he’s sexting multiple women at the same time manipulating them with the promise of marriage. In fact, it’s worse because NAK is a man with millions of followers, wealth, and connections. Yes, he’s connected to political figures of the Muslim countries around the world. And a man of his stature cannot have the same power dynamics in a relationship with a student/employee.
Ever wonder why there are laws limiting teacher/student or boss/employee relationships?
4. NAK can’t be wrong. Ugh, dude, did you look at those ‘halal nudes’ which are NOT photoshopped by the way?
5. NAK is a human and a prominent religious figure; he deserves forgiveness. Humans make mistakes. So Mahira Khan should be thrown in hell, why? She’s as much human as NAK is. God can forgive NAK, the same God can forgive Mahira Khan, so please don’t judge. Seriously don’t. That’s God’s domain.
