We, as women, have come to idolize the great love we see in movies, the ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan Type’. But your first love is never the greatest. It’s purely the one that teaches you how to love. The first love is meant to teach you what the word entails and in a way teach you about yourself.

You wish to be his first love, but isn’t it better to be his great love? The kind of love that comes from respect, the kind of love that stays and the kind that makes your husband your best friend at the age of 80.

Ask yourself this: would you love him or rather even just like him, if you’d met him back then? Before he understood the pain and the heartbreak? Isn’t he a better man for it? We, as humans, love romanticizing tragedy and heartbreak. You can call it Bollywood or the Prince Charming syndrome, but I don’t believe that love is only one. It comes in many forms.

It can be your husband taking you for chai even when he can’t seem to find his bearings mentally or it could be him trying to be a better man for you before he lets you enter his castle. It is you giving your all to him, it is you living with the pain of his first love. It is you asking for more, but it’s also him giving you the space to ask for more.

So, to the Pakistani wife, my darling, don’t wish to be his first, pray to be his greatest. Because you can!
