PPD is a substance used in permanent hair color. Paraphenylenediamine aka PPD is used in dark hair colors. Companies use it because due to this chemical the colors last longer and gives a more natural look. Another reason it is used in industrial and home-based hair color is that it is the best ingredient to color dark hair. PPD is also used in temporary tattoos and dark colored cosmetics, textile dyes and even printing inks. With all such benefits, PPD has many harmful side effects that can cause some serious problem to people.

This lady got her hair dyed and as she claims that she has been dying her hair for past 15 years approx. She never really faced any such problem but this time, it got very serious, that made her land in the hospital. She experienced irritation and itching after she got her hair dyed. She used L’oreal Triple Creme Excellence in “Black”. The next day, she started feeling an itching sensation on her face and didn’t think the hair dye would be causing it. On the second and third day, she started developing hives and breathing problem, alongside her scalp was burning and itching too. So, she went on and cut her hair off very short!

She said that the smell of the dye on the second and third day was causing her enough problems. She tried washing her hair to remove the color pigments that she had dyed a few days back, but the conditioned worsened when the doctors prescribed her injections. And after four to five days she experienced choking.

This is a serious issue where the companies are not to be blamed when the packaging reads to do a patch test before applying the whole product! Do not take this lightly and try checking products that include PPD. Stay safe!
