A while back one of my teachers commented on me being skinny or as she had put it ‘yeh tum kuch zada hi smart nai ho? Apne bazoo to dekho *tch tch*’ (while I was in the middle of giving my exam I might add).

I like the socially awkward person I am, just replied with an ‘I know’ cause come on, what else was there to say but of course her words affected me to such an extent that I had to fight back tears while I tried to concentrate on what was left of my exam.

To most of you this might seem like the most trivial thing in the world but for someone who has struggled with gaining weight all her life and have had to hear the words ‘haawww hayeee tm to bohhhtt hi pattli ho’ from most people that I have known. Comments like these have always hurt the self-esteem of a person.

What’s worse is the fact that people always talk about how you shouldn’t bully people who are fat because it damages their self-confidence. But they disregard the fact that the same should go for people of all body types and sizes, not just the ones that are fat.

The thing I’m trying to say is that no matter what position you’re in, nothing gives you the right to comment on another person’s physical appearance or any other thing for that matter. People don’t understand the kind of effect a person’s words can have on somebody. Yes, words do frigging HURT!

People are also constantly talking about bullying among peers but no one acknowledges the fact that teachers can be bullies too! It’s not just about this one teacher who commented on my physical appearance but I’m sure there are many others out there who are just like her and might not understand the fact that the duty they have taken upon themselves as teachers nowhere states that you should bully your students.

Being a teacher does NOT give you the right to comment on your students in terms of how they look. If you do, especially in front of a crowd (which did happen in my case and no the laughter of all the other students did no help at all after hearing the teachers words), then that is the most screwed up thing that you can ever do and says a lot about you as a person!

[Note: this incident happened a while back (December of 2016 to be exact) but I wanted to share this experience in the hopes that it’ll make people think twice before they pass remarks on someone’s physical appearance]
