Our society is extremely male-dominated. Yes, I said it. I know you don’t want to hear it (read, in this case) but I’m sorry, you are going to have too. Men are glorified and praised almost all the time – emphasis on almost. The praise is understood when they’ve achieved something and it’s well deserved, but it’s not acceptable when the only reason for worshiping a man is because of the body part he was born with. While society is busy hiding their daughter’s in the dark, it’s showcasing the boys in glaring sunlight.

All because a woman was blessed with the ability to give birth, which is now considered to be a curse. How do you cuss upon a gift the female race was bestowed upon? How can you frown with your ignorant eyes when you hear the doctor say “It’s a girl”? Why do you lower your gaze when a girl is born, but dance with joy when a boy is? You punish her for the gift of birth, but let him go because if he has sex, nobody will know. You do this because my body was designed differently by The Almighty.

But you, my friend fail to realize what I never show you. When my male family member grabs me by my butt and gives a smirk, I cry for hours thinking why he did that and what made him do such a thing. When my dad says I can’t go out late at night because “girls aren’t supposed to roam around this late”. “Why, daddy?” What gave men the right to roam around and what took my right? It’s not fair to discriminate against a gender. Do you know the countless sacrifices I have given just because I wasn’t allowed to go out at night? What happens when my brother and I have the exact exam fees, but you can only pay for one, who do you choose? You choose your son and educate him because my education doesn’t matter because I have to go and get married one day. You choose to educate the son who will one day leave you, abuse you and ignore you for a wife.

This is what society, particularly fails to understand. Women will always be there. We will be there for our parents when they get old and can’t get out of bed to go to the bathroom. We will stand by your side and encourage you. We will slowly suffer every ounce of pain and let our brothers have everything we deserve. We will not utter a word unless spoken too. But most importantly, when your son abandons you for a girl, we will fight for you and make sure you aren’t left alone because we care, we love and we devote everything we have. After all, we’re women and that’s what we do.
